The God Who Speaks Truth: Why Inerrancy Matters
Can You Trust What You’re Reading?
If a professor writes a paper for his students, the students can only trust it if it’s accurate. If it contains mistakes, or even might contain mistakes, its reliability is gone. They wouldn’t know what to accept or what to reject. The same is true with the Word of God. If the Bible might contain errors, then we can never be sure what is true and what is false. Its authority collapses.
But Scripture tells us something far better: God has spoken, and because God is true, His Word is true. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth (John 17:17).
What Inerrancy Means
When God moved the prophets and apostles to write Scripture, He ensured that what they wrote was perfectly accurate. This is what we call the doctrine of inerrancy.
Inerrancy means:
- The original writings (the autographs) contained no errors
- Scripture tells the truth in everything it affirms
- Difficult passages do not undermine its truthfulness
- When all the facts are known and Scripture is rightly interpreted, it is completely trustworthy
Inerrancy does not mean we understand everything easily. It means the Bible itself is without error because God Himself is without error. Every word of God is pure (Proverbs 30:5).
Inspiration and Inerrancy Go Together
These two doctrines are inseparable. Inspiration refers to the divine source and process, God “breathed out” His Word (2 Timothy 3:16). Inerrancy refers to the result—because God inspired it, the final product was without error.
Since God does not “re-inspire” copies or translations, inerrancy applies specifically to the original writings. But that does not leave us uncertain. God has preserved His Word with remarkable accuracy.
Inerrancy Applies to All That Scripture Speaks About
Some claim the Bible is only inerrant in matters of faith or salvation. But Scripture never limits itself that way. The Bible speaks truthfully about: doctrine, morality, history, and science (as described in everyday observational language) No proven scientific or historical fact has ever contradicted Scripture when it is rightly understood. The entirety of your word is truth, each of your righteous judgments endures forever (Psalm 119:160).
But What About Copies and Translations?
Someone may ask, “If we don’t have the original manuscripts, what good is inerrancy?”
It’s a fair question—but the answer is encouraging. Through the discipline of textual criticism, scholars have compared thousands of manuscripts and fragments. As a result, we can say with confidence that the text of Scripture has been preserved with over 99% accuracy. No major doctrine hangs on any disputed reading. God not only inspired His Word—He also preserved it.
The Strongest Argument: The Character of God
The simplest and most powerful argument for inerrancy is this: God cannot lie. God, who cannot lie (Titus 1:2). It is impossible for God to lie (Hebrews 6:18). If God allowed errors into His Word, He would not be the God Scripture declares Him to be. Jesus Himself said: Scripture cannot be broken (John 10:35). Christ treated Scripture as absolutely authoritative and absolutely true. If the Bible contains errors, then either, Jesus was mistaken, or Jesus was dishonest, and both options are impossible for the Son of God.
Why Inerrancy Matters for Your Faith
History shows that when individuals, churches, or seminaries reject inerrancy, they rarely stop there. Denying the truthfulness of Scripture often becomes the first step toward abandoning other essential doctrines: the deity of Christ, the atonement, the resurrection, the authority of Scripture, and the exclusivity of the gospel. Inerrancy is not a minor issue. It is the anchor that keeps the church from drifting into unbelief. When you lose confidence in the Bible, you lose confidence in everything built upon it.
Hold Fast to the Word of Truth
We live in a world filled with shifting opinions, changing values, and uncertain voices. But God has given us a Word that is sure, steadfast, and true. The Bible is not just a book—it is the very voice of God. And because God cannot lie, His Word cannot lie. So, trust it. Build your life on it. Submit to it. Treasure it. Obey it. Lord, your word is forever; it is firmly fixed in heaven (Psalm 119:89).
A Closing Appeal
If you have begun to doubt the reliability of Scripture, come back to the God who speaks truth. If you have neglected the Word, return to it with fresh confidence. If you have been shaken by the voices of the culture, anchor yourself again in the unchanging truth of God.
The God who gave His Son for you has also given His Word to you. And you can trust every word of it.
