God’s Word Is Breathed Out by God
More Than Human Words
People sometimes say a poem, song, or book is inspired when it rises above the ordinary. But when we speak about Scripture, we mean something far greater. The Bible is not merely moving or beautiful. It is God-breathed. Its source is not the imagination of man, but the revelation of God. That means when we open the Scriptures, we are not simply reading religious thoughts about God; we are hearing the very Word God has given. In 1 Thessalonians 2:13 Paul writes, This is why we constantly thank God, because when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you welcomed it not as a human message, but as it truly is, the word of God, which also works effectively in you who believe.
All Scripture Comes from Him
The apostle Paul says it plainly in 2 Timothy 3:16: All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness. Every part of it carries His breath, His truth, and His authority. This is not just a claim about the Bible’s general message. It is a claim about the very words God gave through His servants. The Lord has spoken, and in Scripture He has spoken truly. And because He has spoken, we know that the grass withers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God remains forever. (Isaiah 40:8).
The Word God First Gave
Strictly speaking, inspiration applies to the original writings given through Moses, John, Paul, and the other biblical authors. Those original writings were perfect in all that God intended to say. Faithful copies and sound translations truly give us God’s Word, even though small copying mistakes can appear in the history of transmission. So, when we say the Bible is inerrant, we are speaking first of the original text and, by extension, of accurate copies and translations that faithfully preserve it.
The Holy Spirit Carried the Writers Along
We should not imagine inspiration as if the prophets and apostles were empty instruments taking down cold dictation. The wonder of Scripture is that God used real men with real voices, real vocabulary, and real circumstances, and yet by the Holy Spirit they wrote exactly what God intended without error. Their personalities were not erased, but God’s truth was perfectly preserved. That is why Jesus could say that even the smallest letter and mark would stand true: For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law until all things are accomplished. (Matthew 5:18). The apostle Peter reminds us that, …No prophecy of Scripture comes from the prophet’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by the will of man; instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. (2 Peter 1:20-21).
Because It Is God’s Word, It Rules Us
If the Bible comes from God, then the Bible carries the authority of God. It does not sit beside our opinions as one voice among many. It stands over us. It speaks above culture, above custom, above government, and above our own preferences. When Scripture speaks, God speaks, and the right response of His people is humble obedience.
Hear the Word and Live the Word
The great call upon our lives is not only to admire the Bible, but to know it and obey it. God gave His Word so His people would learn His truth and walk in it. Yes, that means study. Yes, that means careful reading and faithful understanding. But it also means surrender, repentance, trust, and daily obedience. As James says, But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (James 1:22). To hear God’s Word without obeying it is self-deception. But to receive it, believe it, and live it is the steady rhythm of a faithful Christian life.
