The Life-Shaping Power of What We Believe
A Call to Think Faithfully
The Lord has never asked His people to follow Him with empty or careless hearts. He calls us to love Him with all that we are—with our heart, soul, and mind—and to be ready to speak of the hope He has so graciously given us. Peter reminds believers, but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you. (1 Peter 3:15). This means that our thinking matters deeply. God has given us minds not to wander aimlessly, but to be renewed by His truth. As Paul teaches in Romans 12:2, real transformation comes through the renewing of the mind. When the Lord gently reshapes the way we think, He also reshapes the way we live, trust, and walk with Him.
What Lives in the Heart Appears in Life
Scripture lovingly reminds us that our actions do not appear without a cause. What we do is closely tied to what we believe, what we treasure, and what we allow to settle deep within our hearts. Jesus taught that sinful actions flow from within: For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slander. (Matthew 15:19). In the same way, a life of faithfulness is nourished by thoughts that are shaped by God’s truth. The patterns of our lives often reveal the quiet thoughts we have been carrying for a long time. This is why the Lord cares not only about what we do outwardly, but also about what is taking root within us inwardly.
Ideas Bear Fruit
Ideas are never as small as they first appear. Over time, they bear fruit in the real world and in the hidden corners of the heart. False ideas can confuse us, mislead us, and bring real sorrow. History itself reminds us of this. The ideas associated with men such as Charles Darwin and Friedrich Nietzsche did not remain locked away in books or classrooms; they shaped the moral and spiritual climate of entire societies. But true ideas—because they are rooted in God’s truth—can steady us, heal us, and lead us into life. We see this in everyday ways: beliefs shape decisions, and decisions gradually shape the direction of a life. In our homes, our relationships, our worship, and our private thoughts, what we believe eventually becomes visible. That is why it is such a mercy when the Lord fills our minds with what is true instead of leaving us to wander in error.
Our Thoughts About God Matter Most
Among all the thoughts that shape a person’s life, none is more important than the thoughts we have about God. A. W. Tozer wisely said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”1 If we imagine God to be distant, cold, harsh, or small, our lives will begin to reflect those distortions. But when by grace we come to know Him as He truly is—holy, sovereign, wise, just, merciful, patient, and full of steadfast love—our hearts are steadied. Our worship grows deeper, our trust becomes sweeter, and our obedience becomes less a burden and more a glad response to His goodness. What we believe about God touches everything because He Himself is at the center of everything.
How We View Scripture Shapes How We Live
What we believe about the Bible reaches into the ordinary moments of everyday life more than we often realize. If we believe that Scripture is truly God’s Word, we will begin to come to it not as a burden, but as a gift. We will want to listen, to submit, and to order our lives by what God has said. But if we treat it as merely human advice or as something optional, we will soon look elsewhere for wisdom, comfort, and direction. The way we respond to God’s Word says much about the way we are responding to God Himself. Yet His Word is not given to crush us. It is given to lead us, correct us, comfort us, and guide us in the good way.
Filling the Mind with What Is True
God’s Word does not simply warn us about harmful ways of thinking; it lovingly leads us toward what is good, true, and life-giving. Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy—dwell on these things. (Philippians 4:8). This is not a cold command, but a gracious invitation from our Father. As our minds are shaped by what is true and beautiful in His sight, our lives begin to bear the quiet fruit of that truth. It is true that bad ideas bring painful consequences, but it is also gloriously true that God, in His grace, teaches His people to set their minds on what leads to life, peace, joy, and faithful obedience.
