The Path of Life: Christ the Way, the Presence, and the Joy of God
The Call to Walk God’s Path
There is something deeply inviting about a path. Not the rush and noise of a crowded highway, but a quiet path that calls the weary soul to come aside and rest. It brings to mind still waters, green pastures, and the kind of place where a person can breathe again. Scripture often speaks of God’s way for His people like that. It is the path of life (Psalm 16:11), a level path (Psalm 27:11), the path of your commands (Psalm 119:35), and the ancient paths where we find rest for our souls (Jeremiah 6:16). God says that if we acknowledge Him in all our ways, he will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:6). And Proverbs tell us, The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until midday (Proverbs 4:18).
Christ Is the Path of Life
Now we must say plainly that the way of wisdom is not a mere idea or a religious system. The way of wisdom is Christ Himself. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). And Scripture says that Christ who became wisdom from God for us (1 Corinthians 1:30). So, when Proverbs says, Her ways are pleasant, and all her paths, peaceful (Proverbs 3:17), we can rightly see their fullest meaning in Him. Christ is not only the One who shows the way; He is the Way. He is not only the One who gives life; He is our Life. And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son (1 John 5:11). The Christian does not walk this path hoping one day to earn life. Eternal life is the gift of God in Christ now. The one who has the Son has life (1 John 5:12).
A Narrow Way, Yet a Blessed Way
Now let us be honest and biblical. The Christian life is not soft, shallow, or sentimental. Jesus never called men to an easy life. He called them to deny themselves, take up the cross, and follow Him. He told us that the gate is strait and the way is narrow that leads unto life (Matt. 7:14). There are trials, tribulations, temptations, and sometimes persecution. Yet even here the believer can know real peace. There may be pressure on the outside and yet peace on the inside. Why? Because our Lord also said, For my yoke is easy and my burden is light (Matthew 11:30). His commands are not a burden (1 John 5:3). This is not because discipleship is cheap, but because Christ is sufficient. He gives grace for the road, strength for the battle, and peace in the midst of the storm.
The Path, the Presence, and the Pleasures
Listen again to Psalm 16:11: You reveal the path of life to me; in your presence is abundant joy; at your right hand are eternal pleasures. Here is the whole Christian life in one verse. First, there is the path. This is the path of life, and in the fullest sense that path is Christ. He is our righteousness, our sanctification, and our redemption (1 Cor. 1:30). He is the old path, the true path, the living path. Second, there is the presence. The path is before us, but the Lord Himself is with us. Jesus said, I am with you always, to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20). And again, I will never leave you or abandon you (Hebrews 13:5). That is why the believer is never abandoned on the road of obedience. Third, there are the pleasures. These are not the empty pleasures of the world, which pass away and leave the soul barren. These are holy joys found in fellowship with God. in your presence is abundant joy. The world promises pleasure and gives emptiness. Christ gives Himself, and in Him there is joy, peace, and everlasting satisfaction. As Psalm 36:8 says, You let them drink from your refreshing stream.
A Closing Appeal
So, what should we do with this truth? We should seek the Lord and walk in His way. Stand by the roadways and look. Ask about the ancient paths, “Which is the way to what is good?” Then take it and find rest for yourselves (Jeremiah 6:16). If you are saved, do not wander into the broken paths of this world. Stay close to Christ. Walk in obedience. Trust His Word. Rest in His presence. Rejoice in His promises. And if you are not in Christ, then hear the call of the gospel. The path of life is not found in morality, religion, self-improvement, or human wisdom. It is found in Jesus Christ alone. Turn from sin and come to Him by faith. He died for sinners and rose again. In Him there is forgiveness, reconciliation, and eternal life. The one who has the Son has life. The one who does not have the Son of God does not have life (1 John 5:12). Come to Christ, the only Savior, and walk the path of life. His ways are pleasant and His path is still peace (Proverbs 3:17).
