Victory Through Our Lord Jesus Christ
“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!” (1 Corinthians 15:57).
Christ Took Our Sin and Paid Our Debt
When Jesus hung on the cross at Calvary, He was not dying as a victim of history. He was dying as the spotless Lamb of God, bearing our sin, paying our sin debt, and redeeming us from the curse of the law. The cross was not an accident; it was the plan of God. Jesus stood in our place. He carried what we could never carry. He paid what we could never pay.
The Bible says, “He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). And again, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us” (Galatians 3:13). That is substitutionary atonement: Jesus taking the sinner’s place, satisfying the righteous demands of God’s divine law, and opening the way for sinners to be reconciled to God.
Christ Rose in Victory Over Sin and Death
The sinners sin was placed on the person of Jesus Christ at Calvary. But praise God, the story did not end at the tomb. Jesus rose from the dead. He conquered sin. He defeated death. He broke the power of the grave. His resurrection declares that the sacrifice was accepted, the debt was paid, and the victory belongs to the Lord.
Paul writes, “Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, death, is your victory? Where, death, is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:54–55). The resurrection means death no longer has the final word. Sin no longer has the final claim. Satan no longer has the final authority. Jesus Christ is Lord, and His victory is complete.
Christ Gives His Victory to All Who Believe
From the moment of His resurrection, Jesus has shared this victory with everyone who truly believes in Him. This victory is not earned by religious performance. It is not purchased by human effort. It is a gift of grace received through faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Scripture says, “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—not from works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9). God forgives the sins of everyone who comes to His Son in repentance and faith. When God looks upon the redeemed, He sees those covered by the blood of the Lamb, clothed in the righteousness of Christ, and accepted in the Beloved.
Christ’s Victory Should Shape the Way We Live Today
Every believer can live with holy anticipation of eternity in the presence of the Lord. Because Jesus died and rose again, the Christian has a glorious eternal tomorrow. But that future hope is not meant to make us careless today. It is meant to make us faithful, joyful, watchful, and steadfast right now.
Jesus said, “Therefore be alert, since you don’t know what day your Lord is coming” (Matthew 24:42). And John reminds us, “Dear friends, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when he appears, we will be like him because we will see him as he is” (1 John 3:2). The return of Christ is not a side issue. It is a blessed hope that should purify our hearts and strengthen our obedience.
If you’re a believer in Christ, you have a glorious eternal tomorrow that ought to affect your today. If you forget that Jesus is coming back, you are going to live as if He’s not. I encourage you to remember His victory and His return so that you will live in the light of it now.
Closing Appeal: Come to the Victorious Christ
So today, do not look to yourself for victory. Look to Jesus Christ. If you are lost, come to Him in repentance and faith. Confess your sin, trust His finished work on the cross, and receive the forgiveness only He can give. If you are saved, stand firm in the victory He has already won. Live like death has been defeated. Live like sin no longer owns you. Live like Jesus is coming again. “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!” (1 Corinthians 15:57).
