Draw Near
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Heb. 4:16).
When we read this verse, we often focus on the second part of the verse—and for good reason—but in doing so we miss what the first part of the verse teaches. Of all that the first part of the verse teaches, I want to briefly focus in on two things—four words, Let us… draw near….
What is so amazing about those four words? Because there was a time when none of us could do that. You [we] were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience (Eph. 2:1-2).
But now we are encouraged (exhorted) to draw near. How can that be? Paul continues, But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Eph. 2:4-6).
Thou art also free to the throne of grace. It is the believer’s privilege to have access at all times to His heavenly Father. Whatever our desires, our difficulties, our wants, we are at liberty to spread all before Him…We have permission to approach His throne at all times—in midnight’s darkest hour, or in noontide’s most burning heat. Exercise thy right, O believer, and live up to thy privilege. Thou art free to all that is treasured up in Christ—wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. It matters not what thy need is, for there is fulness of supply in Christ, and it is there for thee.1
Exercise thy right, O believer, and live up to thy privilege. So, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ… let us… draw near.
